Seeking Unity in Variety

Closing the Teach For America Blogging Gap
Jun 18 2012

Hello World

I am really excited about having my own Teach for Us blog! Reading these blogs really helped me decide to join TFA last fall and has always provided the nitty gritty on what to expect. For some reason, it can seem rather difficult to find genuine information about certain aspects of the program.
The title of the blog comes from Heilman, who argued that great science and great art stem from the same thing– finding unity in variety. The ability to find or synthesize a pattern in the madness. I have a feeling that this will likely be my philosophy and survival strategy for the duration of this experience.

Thus far, I have stuffed everything I could in the worlds tiniest car and moved 1,200 miles across the country to Chicago, IL. Coming from the South Plains, I’m pretty sure the number of trees I’ve seen in my life has increased ten fold. Also, the billboard to human ratio in Missouri is just insane. I am also enjoying dorm life again. Nothing makes you bond more than living in rooms fit for closets and sharing a down the hall restroom.

From there I survived induction, which consisted of dinners, speeches, discussion circles, community service, and so on. I must say that I have met the most interesting people in the past three days. No one is what you expect– every single person has the most incredible stories. In short, its been pretty humbling.

Now I’m in the twilight zone staring the dark mystery of institute down. Tomorrow… it begins.
